Ingredients
Method
Techniques
  • ½ lb brown sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp ground ginger
  • ¼ tsp ground allspice
  • 0.125 tsp ground cloves
  • table salt
Mix the brown sugar with the cinnamon, ginger, allspice, cloves and a shake of salt; no nutmeg.
  • 7–10 whole Granny Smith apples
Peel, core and slice the apples (slices or chunks).
  • butter
Butter the casserole or pie dish and layer about half the apples, enough to cover the bottom; sprinkle with a lot of the brown sugar mixture and some breadcrumbs, which give the filling body and form a faux crust.
Layering the brown Betty
  • ¾ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 stick butter
Layer the rest of the apples, the rest of the brown sugar and about three-quarters of a cup of breadcrumbs; top with a stick of butter sliced thinly.
Bake at 375F for about 20 minutes covered.
Uncover and bake 15 minutes more.
