Ingredients
Method
Techniques
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon
  • 3½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1½ tsp baking powder
  • 1½ tsp sugar
  • ¾ tsp salt
Mix the flour, baking powder, sugar and salt by hand.
  • ½ cup vegetable shortening
  • 2 tbsp vanilla
  • 1 whole egg
Work in the shortening until the flour feels like wet sand; add the vanilla and the egg and mix.
  • 1 cup Mexican orange Fanta
Slowly add the orange soda while mixing until no dry flour remains, adding a little more liquid if needed.
Divide into balls sized to the buñuelos wanted and to fit the frying pan; cover with parchment paper and plastic wrap.
Roll each ball out with a palote as thin as possible, until you can see through it, then stretch it thin all round by hand, patching any rips; set aside on a cloth.
Optionally air dry 15 to 20 minutes per side, flipping when dry to the touch, so they soak up less oil and fry crispier.
Why air dry before frying
  • oil
Poke with a fork. Heat a skillet half full of oil over medium heat.
Fry about 1 minute on each side until golden.
Drain off as much oil as possible and quickly coat with cinnamon sugar.
