Unwrapping soft caramels

  • ⅓ cup evaporated milk
Stir the cake mix, softened butter and a third cup evaporated milk together until it comes together into an extremely thick, clay-like dough.
Cake mix dough, and why it makes brownies
Preheat the oven to 350F, 180C.
Melting caramels into sauce
  • 80 ml evaporated milk
  • 1 cup chopped nuts
Microwave the caramels with another third cup evaporated milk in a heat-safe bowl about a minute, then stir; heat only until it just melts into a thick caramel sauce, or it can seize or burn.
Break up half the dough with fingers and dot it in little dollops over a 9x13 inch cake pan; pre-bake about five minutes until they look like little cookies.
  • 170 g chocolate chips
Sprinkle on the chocolate chips and the chopped nuts, into the edges and corners, then pour the caramel over.
Layering chips, nuts, caramel and dough
Distribute the remaining dough over the top, with a blob in each corner.
Bake 18 minutes, until it still looks a little underdone; it firms up as it cools.
Cool; refrigerate overnight for extra chewy brownies.
